The Jackson Laboratory is an internationally renowned research organization. JAX is generally thought of in terms of its contributions to scientific knowledge, its eminent faculty and research associates, and its collaborations with leading research and medical centers around the world. But in support of its nonprofit mission, JAX is also a major business enterprise with significant and lasting impact on the states and local communities that are home to our campuses.
JAX continues to grow — jobs and revenues are now at their highest levels ever. Employment has increased to almost 2,500 employees in the U.S. with an additional 400 abroad. In 2021, JAX’s total operational revenue was $551 million, an increase of 83% since 2015, with approximately $419 million from the mouse sales and services division, and $109.5 million from grants and research contracts. Overall, in 2021, JAX had an economic impact of more than $1 billion.

In 2021, the total economic contribution of JAX in ME is estimated at $369.1 million in business output (sales), $284.8 million in total earnings and 3,900 total jobs.
The JAX payroll includes almost 1,600 Maine workers
and totals $108 million annually. In 2021, 233 new hires joined JAX in Maine. JAX employees live in 123 towns and 13 counties arou
nd Maine and earn an average salary of $68,800, 31% higher than the statewide average. Roughly 99% of the JAX workforce in Maine is employed full-time.
JAX paid 402 Maine-based vendors more than $42.1 million to support JAX’s operations. The network of vendors spanned 92 communities across the state from Kittery to Presque Isle, including 74 companies located in Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor and 37 located in Ellsworth.
JAX attracted 1,180 visitors to Bar Harbor, a number much lower than usual due to the pandemic. Most visitors stayed an average of two days in the region. An additional 98 employees from other JAX campuses in Connecticut and California visited JAX in Maine, staying an average of five days. Based on Maine Office of Tourism research on visitor spending, collectively these visitors spent just under $300,000 in Maine. This spending supported a total economic impact of $541,000 in business output, $176,000 in earnings and six jobs.

In 2021, the total economic impact to Connecticut was estimated to be $115.9 million in business output (sales), $93.4 million in total earnings and 1,046 total jobs.
The JAX payroll includes almost 350 Connecticut workers and totals $34 million annually. 69 new hires joined JAX in Connecticut in 2021. The average salary for a Connecticut employee is $97,400, 28% higher than the statewide average. Employees live in 85 towns around the state, primarily concentrated in the municipalities of West Hartford and Farmington.
JAX paid 178 Connecticut-based vendors more than $8 million in 2021 to support JAX’s operations. The network of vendors spanned 65 communities across the state, including 38 companies located in Farmington and 34 located in Hartford and West Hartford.
JAX-GM attracted 1,144 visitors to the Farmington campus, who stayed an average of two days in the region. An additional 124 employees from other JAX locations visited the Farmington campus, staying an average of four days. Based on Connecticut tourism research on visitor spending, collectively these visitors spent more than $180,000. This spending supported almost $330,000 in business sales, $100,000 in earnings and three jobs.

In 2021, the total economic contribution to California was estimated at $141.4 million in business output (sales), $80.2 million in total earnings and 1,457 total jobs.
The JAX payroll in California includes 415 workers and totals almost $27 million annually. 120 new hires joined JAX in California in 2021. Employees live in 55 towns around California and earn an average annual salary of $64,900. As of 2021, 100% of the JAX workforce was employed full-time.
JAX paid 325 California-based vendors more $23 million in 2021 to support JAX’s operations. The network of JAX vendors spanned 110 communities across the state.
JAX attracted 2,578 visitors to the Sacramento campus, who stayed an average of two days in the region. An additional 40 employees from other JAX locations visited the Sacramento campus, staying an average of 12 days. Based on tourism research for California, collectively these visitors spent more than $930,000. This spending supported just under $2 million in business output, $268,000 in earnings and nine jobs.
In addition, a preliminary estimate of the impact on JAX spending outside of these three states suggests JAX supported at least an additional $390 million in business output (sales), $80 million in total earnings and 840 total jobs across the country.
